{"id":37,"date":"2021-05-01T04:41:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-01T04:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.wordgeeks.net\/?p=37"},"modified":"2021-05-02T00:08:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-02T00:08:44","slug":"one-day-without-big-tech-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.wordgeeks.net\/?p=37","title":{"rendered":"One Day without Big Tech: Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;ve been thinking about trying one day without &#8220;big tech&#8221;, to quantify how much everyday life relies on it, distinguish between what&#8217;s absolutely needed and what&#8217;s irrelevant, and understand &#8220;rights&#8221; (who really &#8220;owns&#8221; the content\/service\/etc.). After this, I may further try a week with only Free Software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here goes the plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Devices<ul><li>No <strong>Kindle<\/strong><\/li><li>No <strong>iPhone<\/strong> or <strong>iPad<\/strong>. Need to fully turn them off, otherwise there&#8217;s still a sense of &#8220;being connected&#8221; and it&#8217;s inevitable to see notifications. And this implies no <strong>apps<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Compromise on laptop: I&#8217;ll have to use my laptop with Windows 10, as I&#8217;m too lazy to set up dual boot Ubuntu until now. But I&#8217;ll restrict the software used and websites accessed.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Software (locally installed on PC, as I&#8217;ll turn off both phones and tablets)<ul><li>No <strong>WeChat<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Telegram<\/strong> (I don&#8217;t want to argue whether it counts as &#8220;big tech&#8221;, but one day away from it is nice by itself so why not).<\/li><li>No <strong>Spotify<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>HomeBudget<\/strong> (I&#8217;m already too lazy to record transactions daily).<\/li><li>No <strong>Dropbox<\/strong> (turn off auto-sync).<\/li><li>No <strong>MS suite<\/strong> (Office, and turn off OneDrive).<\/li><li>No <strong>Google Earth<\/strong>.<\/li><li>I&#8217;ll need to use VSCode and WSL. And Adobe Reader.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Websites<ul><li>Google related<ul><li>No <strong>YouTube<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Google<\/strong> (I&#8217;m already searching with DDG for a large portion of queries).<\/li><li>No <strong>Google Translate<\/strong> (just compare with textbooks when studying Korean).<\/li><li>No <strong>Google Maps<\/strong> (so pick a day I don&#8217;t have to drive to an unfamiliar place).<\/li><li>No <strong>GMail<\/strong> (it&#8217;s long due that I set up my own email server).<\/li><li>No <strong>Google Calendar<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Google Drive<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>SNS: No <strong>Facebook<\/strong>, <strong>Instagram<\/strong>, <strong>LinkedIn<\/strong>, and <strong>Twitter<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Reddit<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>VLive<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Douban<\/strong> or <strong>GoodReads<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Amazon<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Yelp<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Netflix<\/strong>\/<strong>HBOMax<\/strong>\/<strong>Viki<\/strong>\/<strong>Bilibili<\/strong>.<\/li><li>No <strong>Medium<\/strong>.<\/li><li>I will still use GitHub.<\/li><li>I will not avoid using websites hosted on AWS\/GCP\/Azure\/etc.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What I anticipate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One challenge is listening to music. I don&#8217;t have a CD player. The only music I can listen to will be the digital album I purchased (&#8220;Kill This Love&#8221;), and some pirated music I downloaded long ago.<ul><li>Richard Stallman advocated to <a href=\"https:\/\/stallman.org\/amazon.html\">buy books from physical stores, with cash<\/a>. I&#8217;ll probably consider the same for music, buying either physical CDs or downloadable MP3s.<\/li><li>When thinking about this, I realize it&#8217;s not worth compromising so much info (what I listened to, at what time, on which device, at which location, etc.) for the supposed benefit of streaming. Not to mention other things those companies will possibly do.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The same goes for videos.<\/li><li>I&#8217;ll miss &#8220;stories&#8221; on Instagram.
